A Richmond, Virginia-headquartered trucking company will transition into operating as part of Swift Transportation later this month, company officials say.
On January 14, 2026, Abilene Motor Express leadership announced that the company “will be transitioning into the Swift Transportation business as part of a broader effort to improve efficiency and streamline operations.”
Abilene Motor Express was acquired by Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings in 2018 but has remained in operation as a stand-alone business since that time.
Abilene will continue operations until January 27, 2026, at which time the company’s resources will transition to Swift.
“Abilene drivers will transition to Swift and will receive clear guidance and ongoing support throughout the process. We thank Abilene team members for their years of dedication and look forward to welcoming those joining the Swift family,” said Abilene Motor Express President Larry Johnson.
“Customers are being contacted directly to align on next steps and ongoing service needs. We appreciate the continued partnership and look forward to supporting their transportation needs through Swift,” Johnson said.
Abilene operates more than 300 power units, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s SAFER website.
Abilene Motor Express was founded in 1986 with a single tractor and expanded to become a nationwide carrier.
