Wisconsin troopers stop semi truck for 30,000 pound weight violation

Published:

The Wisconsin State Patrol (WSP) recently caught a semi truck driver operating well over the legal weight without a permit.

Troopers recently stopped a semi truck and trailer for a “spot check” and determined that the vehicle weighed close to 110,000 pounds, WSP said in a May 27 social media post.

“Legally, vehicle combinations can only operate up to 80,000 pounds without a permit,” troopers said.

WSP said that overweight trucks “cause damages to roads, more wear and tear on vehicles, and decreased stopping abilities.”

Under Wisconsin Statute § 348.21, the penalty for violating vehicle weight limits is as follows:

  • First conviction — between $50 and $200 dollars plus fifteen cents for each pound of total excess load if the excess is over 5,000 pounds
  • Second and subsequent convictions within a 12 month period — between $100 and $300 plus eighteen cents for each pound of total excess load if the excess is over 5,000 pounds
