All 53 victims of the recent human smuggling tragedy in San Antonio have been identified and all but two have been sent home to loved ones, the Medical Examiner announced on Tuesday morning.
Dozens of migrants were found inside of a hot trailer off Quintana Road in San Antonio, Texas on June 27th. A total of 53 have died as a result of the incident, 40 males and 13 females, ranging in age from 13 to 55 years old, reported Kens5 News.
Dr. Molina, chief Medical Examiner for Bexar County, says that she and seven other staff members worked through the night following the discovery to properly process the scene on Quintana Road.
“This momentous feat was accomplished by our morgue, investigations, and physicians staff all working extra hours and calling the assistance of two locums physicians, two physicians from the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office and one examiner from the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office,” Dr. Molina told commissioners.
Molina says that, thanks to the help of Mexican, Guatemalan and Honduran consulates, all of the victims have been identified, and all but two have been repatriated “with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
“The release of the individuals, that’s due to the consulate procedures and the families. So, the two we have left, I anticipate they’ll be released from our care soon,” Dr. Molina said.
