A suspect is dead after he was shot by police after reportedly threatening customers with a gun at a Love’s truck stop in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 25, police received reports about a suspect threatening several people with a handgun at the Love’s truck stop located off I-40 in Albuquerque.
As police were on the way to the truck stop, the incident escalated and a Love’s security guard allegedly fired one shot towards the suspect.
Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina said that the suspect pointed the gun at passing vehicles including a semi truck.
Medina said that the suspect also threw the gun at passing vehicles at least once.
The suspect then fled on foot on 6th Street, reportedly throwing rocks at a power transformer.
By this time, police had arrived on scene.
Medina said that the suspect began to walk towards police, pointing the gun at officers.
At least one police officer responded by opening fire, striking the suspect at least once.
The suspect was transported to a hospital for treatment but did not survive.
No other injuries were reported.
Medina said that he has video evidence of the incident that will be released to the public in the future.
Medina said that the suspect had no history of mental health issues and “very little” criminal history.
