Bad GPS directions land trucker 2 years probation

Published:

A trucker has been sentenced to two years probation after bad GPS directions led to a fatal oversize load accident in Ohio back in 2019.

The accident happened in Franklin County, Ohio at around 1:40 a.m. on August 30th, 2019.

According to The Columbus Dispatch, 46-year-old truck driver Cody D. Weathers was following GPS directions and heading north on Interstate 270 when the top of his oversize load struck the Claycraft Road Bridge overpass. The force of the strike shook the load loose and caused it to roll off of the trailer. The large dust collector then came to a rest across all lanes of the interstate.

Two motorists heading north on I-270 crashed into the load. 38-year-old Muhammed Mubaraka died in the wreck. The other motorist was not hurt.

Back in October, Weathers pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide, but was not given his sentence until Thursday, February 22nd. The judge sentenced Weathers to two years of probation instead of the potential five years in prison. Weathers will serve his probation in Texas, where he currently lives.

“Unfortunately, his equipment malfunctioned and told him he was good. Obviously, it was not good,” said Kaitlyn Stephens, Weathers’ attorney.

Weathers is no longer a truck driver.
