Texas transportation officials are reminding drivers about upcoming changes that will “eliminate most vehicle safety inspections” for non-commercial vehicles.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS) issued a statement this week to remind drivers that as of January 1, 2025, non-commercial vehicles will no longer need a vehicle safety inspection prior to registration.
This change to vehicle inspection requirements comes after Texas lawmakers passed  House Bill 3297 into law in 2023, abolishing the Vehicle Safety Inspection Program for non-commercial vehicles.
After January 1, 2025, in place of the vehicle inspection, all non-commercial vehicles in the state will be subject to a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee.Â
Commercial vehicle inspection requirements will not change.
“All commercial vehicles in all counties will still be required to obtain a passing vehicle safety inspection,” Texas DPS said. Commercial vehicles are not subject to the inspection program replacement fee.
All commercial and non-commercial vehicles must still be registered with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.
