A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a series of multiple fatality collisions on the Ohio Turnpike on Thursday.

Philadelphia resident Naimov Istam, 24, has been arrested and charged with negligent vehicular homicide and speeding, WTOL reports. He was booked into the Lucas County jail on Thursday afternoon.

Istam pleaded not guilty to the charges on Friday morning.

A series of three deadly crashes involving 13 total vehicles took place between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. on the Ohio Turnpike between mile marker 49 and mile marker 51. Four people were killed and at least ten people were injured in the three crashes. Additionally, first responders were treated for exposure to sulfuric acid that one of the commercial vehicles was hauling.

Istam was involved in a crash at mile marker 50 that occurred shortly before 6:30 a.m., leaving one person dead and others injured, according to reports.

Istam has been identified as a commercial vehicle driver.

Authorities said that Istam failed to stop for slowed traffic.

The crashes are under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
