A Pennsylvania trucking company and its owner, Dean A. Landis, were sentenced Tuesday to probation and fined for falsifying driver logbooks.
Landis was sentenced to 12 months of house arrest and 5 years of probation and must pay a fine of $15,000.
Landis’ company, D.A. Landis Trucking Inc., was sentenced to four years of probation, fined $250,000 and ordered to implement a comprehensive compliance and ethics plan.
In March, Landis and his company pleaded guilty to ordering their drivers to falsify their logbooks, to cover up that their drivers were exceeding the allowable driving hours and violating HOS laws.
“The extra hours were being worked in 2008 and 2009, prosecutors said, to haul condemned milk to a New Jersey cheese manufacturer, rather than dumping the milk as state law requires,” Â Layover reported. “Milk processors had condemned the milk because it was tainted with antibiotics.”
Though Landis and his company are facing stiff penalties, they got off relatively easy.  Originally, Landis was facing 10 counts of conspiracy, 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.  Landis pleaded guilty to 1 count of conspiracy– the other charges were dropped. Landis’ company was facing a $5.5 million fine and a 5-year probation.
