CDL Life has a healthy group of readers who grind gears down under. This is our salute to our Australian truck driver friends from halfway around the world.
From the looks of it, Australian road regulations might be a bit more lax, but what do we know? It’s most likely the result of how little of the massive continent is settled and civilized. It’s population density is one of the lowest in the world, but its economy thrives. That means lots of work for truck drivers, and fairly good wages too.
Rich in natural resources, Australia is a major exporter of agricultural products, particularly wheat and wool, minerals such as iron-ore and gold, and energy in the forms of liquified natural gas and coal. These relatively massive industries on the island continent keep the tires warm on trucking routes 24 hours a day. Although agriculture and natural resources account for only 3 per cent and 5 per cent of GDP respectively, they contribute substantially to export performance.
With that in mind, let’s see how the Aussies get ‘er done with some of their massive road trains. It’s an interesting look into a country North Americans rarely hear about or see.
