A Werner driver and the mother of his child are under investigation following an incident on Tuesday morning at the carrier’s 5448 Oakview Drive, Allentown, Pennsylvania location.
According to The Morning Call, police were called to the terminal at approximately 9:40 a.m., on a report of a disturbance between a 24-year-old Werner driver, the 23-year-old mother of the driver’s child and Werner staff. The couple and the staff were allegedly fighting over whether or not the couple had a child with them in the truck– the couple denied having a child in the truck.
The Morning Call reported that police witnessed the couple walking toward the terminal, then the woman disappeared with a duffel bag.
Police spoke with the driver, who admitted to having his 2-year-old daughter in the truck with them, but the driver said he didn’t know where his the child’s mother and the child went.
Police called for a helicopter and tracking dogs to search for the pair.
At approximately 11:45 a.m., police found the woman and toddler about a mile and a half from the Werner terminal. The two were taken to a local hospital to be checked out.
Police are investigating whether or not the child had been concealed in the duffel bag.
Werner prohibits children from riding in the company’s trucks.
“Company policy prohibits drivers from taking children with them on Werner’s trucks, and company officials called police to report the father and mother from Lillington, N.C., had a girl hidden with them,” The Morning Call reported.
The couple’s names have not been released and police are investigating whether or not any laws were broken. The Lehigh County Children and Youth Services office will aid in the investigation.
Drivers, does your carrier allow children to ride in your truck? If so, tell us the name of the carrier you drive for, so we can spread the word. Would you drive for a company that’s not “family friendly?”
