Starting this weekend, motorists who want to avoid waiting for ski traffic on I-70 between Empire and Idaho Springs in Colorado will be able to enjoy the use of an express toll lane — but truck drivers will not have that option.
The eastbound I-70 Mountain Express Lane will open on Saturday. It will be free to motorists during an initial testing period. Once the toll begins, drivers will pay anywhere from $3 to $30, depending on the time and how heavy traffic is. The toll lane will only be open 73 days each year — on weekends and Monday holidays. At times when the toll lane isn’t open, it will be used as a shoulder.
No motorcycles, trailers, or trucks longer than 25 feet will be allowed to use the express toll lane.
