The dashcam footage is dated August 17, 2017.
The video was originally posted on Reddit. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) vehicle can be seen entering the intersection to make a left at Jacobs and Westminster Highway, as the truck was traveling straight through the intersection.
The RCMP officer was injured; however, was released from the hospital over the weekend.
Since the video has gone viral, it has sparked lots of online conversation about who had the right of way.
Global News comments, “The rules of the road, especially turning left at an intersection are pretty straightforward, but poorly understood.”
Vehicles turning left do not have the right of way. Both vehicles in this accident entered the intersection on a yellow light. The police vehicle’s lights were not on.
Safemotorist.com provides a clear explanation, saying, “The law gives the right of way to no one, but it does state who must yield (give up) the right of way. Every driver, motorcyclist, moped rider, bicyclist, and pedestrian must do everything possible to avoid a crash.”
The welfare of the truck driver is not known at this time.
