Truck driver crashes into ditch to avoid school bus collision

Published:

A truck driver suffered injuries after avoiding a school bus that veered in front of his semi truck in Manhattan, Kansas.

The crash was reported at 2:56 p.m. on April 16, 2018 at the intersection of Walters Drive and US-24.

According to CJ Online, the bus driver was westbound on Walters Drive when she failed to yield the right of way to a 2000 Peterbilt semi-trailer driven by 45 year old truck driver Delbert L. Henson.

Henson avoided collision by steering right into a ditch and applying the brakes. During the attempt to correct back onto the paved roadway, the truck flipped onto its right side and came to rest in the east ditch.

Henson was taken to Via Christi hospital in Manhattan for reported injuries. Laura Kumle, the 36 year old Manhattan school bus driver, was reported uninjured. Both parties were wearing seat belts.

No other injuries were reported. It isn’t clear from the highway patrol’s crash log whether there were students aboard the bus.
