Multiple injuries reported after large explosion at UPS Freight facility

Several people were reportedly injured in a large accidental explosion at a UPS Freight facility in Kentucky this morning.

The explosion happened around 7:45 a.m. in a maintenance building at the UPS Freight Facility at the 200 block of  Blue Sky Parkway in Lexington. Authorities reported “significant” damage to the walls and roof of the building as a result of the explosion. Workers in nearby businesses reported hearing a loud blast that shook the walls of their workplaces.

According to the Lexington Fire Department, two people were taken to the hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries while another six were transported to the hospital for observation.

The Lexington Police Department reports that the explosion is believed to have been accidental. “Nothing leads us to believe this is anything other than an accidental explosion,” tweeted the Lexington Fire Department.

Lexington Fire Battalion Chief Jason Wells told WDRB that the explosion was believed to have been caused by tanks of acetylene which were on a tractor trailer parked outside of the building.

The building was evacuated and authorities are working to determine that the structure is stable.

The incident is still under investigation.
