This week, troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) have been conducting surprise commercial vehicle inspections to try to nab truckers who avoid weigh stations.
On Tuesday, July 28, troopers with NSP’s Carrier Enforcement Division’s Metropolitan Aggressive and Prevention Selective (MAPS) Team conducted surprise inspections in the York, Nebraska, area. On the 65 CMVs that were inspected, troopers found 196 safety violations and placed 33 vehicles or trailers out of service. Troopers also placed five drivers out of service for various violations during the York inspections.
On Wednesday, July 29, the MAPS Team conducted another series of surprise inspections in Lincoln. On the 32 CMVs inspected, troopers found 113 safety violations and placed 21 vehicles out of service. Two drivers were also placed out of service for various violations during the Lincoln inspections.
Troopers say that “the surprise inspections target commercial vehicles that might not travel outside the city or pass through weigh stations as part of their regular routes. Additional MAPS operations will be conducted throughout the summer.”
The NSP’s MAPS Team often does surprise inspections two or three days in a row and these inspections often come shortly after a larger enforcement effort like the CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Week.
