Festive semi sweeps first place in holiday event, prize donated to community

A decked-out Christmas trailer helped an Oakfield couple bring home the first-place prize in an annual holiday contest over the weekend.

The New York-based couple, James and Donna Dwyer, won $100 in the Oakfield Betterment Committee’s Christmas contest. In a heart-warming gesture, the couple insisted that the money be donated back to the community, which will be put towards the local food pantry.

The Dwyers toped off their display by dressing up as Santa Clause and Mrs. Clause, adding some extra Christmas spirit and drawing families across the area to their home.

The decorations on their house and truck took about a day and a half to set up according to the couple.

“We’ve been doing it for about 10 years. We’ve had as much as about 700 feet of rope lights on it and we’ve tried different variations/configurations over the years.” All the blue flashing lights are new this year. My wife takes care of the trailer. That’s her idea. She helps me with the truck. Our tractor out front, which has got decorations on that, that’s a little newer this year. Each year, we try something different.” James Dwyer said Sunday evening to The Daily News.

The tractor-trailer is a working truck and featured a fully lit Christmas display on the trailer.

“The trailer, my wife has always done, but the lights here are different,” he said. “We’ve changed them up over the years — different types of lights, from the rope lights to the alternating lights. Every once in a while, she’ll buy something new for the trailer. We’re not sure what it will be next year. You never know.”

“We’ve got about two more years before we retire and then somebody else will have to do it,” James said. “We enjoy it. The kids love it.”
