Escaped convict heads to truck stop looking to hitchhike

Published:

A man was taken back into custody after escaping a correctional facility in Ohio very early on Thursday morning.

Joseph Mitchell escaped the Eastern Ohio Correctional Center in Wintersville after midnight January 27th.

According to Herald Star, Mitchell climbed a fence to escape the facility and fled to the Kings Truck Stop. While there, Mitchell allegedly began asking drivers for rides back home to Steubenville using a fake name and even tried to open tractor trailer doors and climb inside. At some point, he got a ride in the back of a Chevy Tahoe but was soon discovered by police.

Once discovered, police say Mitchell gave them a family member’s name instead of his own, but was soon booked into the Jefferson County Jail on charges of escape as well as falsification. A passenger in the Tahoe, 18-year-old Jazmain Bond, was also charged with falsification, and the driver of the Tahoe, 46-year-old Reginald Dwayne Johnson, was cited for no license.

Mitchel later required 15 stitches for a cut to his hand sustained during his escape. He was sentenced to EOCC originally for weapons under disability.
