On Tuesday morning, Oregon transportation officials were able to reopen I-84 after a portion of the interstate was closed overnight due to a winter weather pileup.
Oregon State Police (OSP) initially responded to the pileup around 12:30 p.m. on Monday on westbound I-84 near mile marker 230, about 20 miles east of Pendleton.
“Responding officers were notified of additional crashes while they were arriving, and then once on scene, officers could hear crashes occurring behind them,” troopers said in a news release.
According to OSP, approximately 98 vehicles collided in a one mile stretch of the interstate.
State police were unable to provide information on how many people were injured.
The Oregon Department of Transportation was able to reopen eastbound I-84 around midnight. The westbound lanes reopened around 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
OSP called the pileup a “large scale incident,” with multiple agencies responding, including the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, Umatilla County Emergency Management, Pendleton Fire, Umatilla County Fire District One, Pilot Rock Fire
East Umatilla County Fire and Rescue, CTUIR Fire and Ambulance, CTUIR Emergency Management, La Grande Fire and Ambulance, Oregon Department of Transportation, and additional medic units from Union and Walla Walla County.
