Truck drivers are often the targets of violent crime; why isn’t more being done to protect them?

Truck driving is historically ranked as one of the most dangerous jobs in the country.In 2018, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported truck driving as the most deadly job in the country.

Truck drivers have spent the last year on the front line of a global pandemic and protests. 

Just this week, truck drivers were shot at on the highway in three states.

Michigan

On, July 14 on I-94 at Exit 97 in Battle Creek, Michigan, a small grey car reportedly passed a semi truck on the shoulder of the interstate and fired on the passenger side door before fleeing the scene. No injuries were reported.

Oregon

On July 14, OSP issued a statement about multiple vehicles being targeted by a shooter on I-5 between Roseburg and Grants Pass. 

At least one of the vehicles targeted by the shooter was a semi truck, according to local news outlet Fox 26.

“In the last several weeks OSP has investigated 5 vehicles that have been struck by bullets on Interstate 5 between milepost 67 and 100,” troopers wrote.

Wisconsin

On Wednesday, July 15 in Milwaukee, at approximately 2:30 a.m.in Wisconsin, a motorist opened fire on a truck that was headed westbound on I-94.

The truck driver was not injured in the incident.
