John Belushi – Jan 24 1949 – Mar 5 1982

Today we’re taking our collective hats (and sunglasses) off in honor of comedian/actor John Belushi’s death. John died of heart failure 30 years ago today, driven by years of hard drinking, drugs and obesity.

Belushi was a huge talent, both metaphorically and literally. His range of comic timing, subtleties and creativity helped turn the opening seasons of Saturday Night Live into a cultural phenomenon. Original SNL cast members and writers went on to grand success much in part due to John’s versatility as an entertainer. We’re almost certain that people like Chevy Chase, Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, John Candy, Billy Crystal and Harold Ramis wouldn’t be household names today without John’s collaboration. In any skit or movie he appeared in, he was always the loose cannon that you wanted to keep your eye on, no matter how much work anyone else was doing in the scene.

Today John would be 63. We thought we would take a minute and show you part of what we consider one of the greatest car chases on film – the finishing car chase from the 1980 film “The Blues Brothers.” Due to licensing restrictions, we can’t show you the whole thing, but we thought the ridiculous near finale when the Brothers Blue were finally able to dispatch those pesky Illinois Nazis into an asphalt grave would be fitting tribute.

We hope you remember Belushi as fondly as we do. Have a look and a laugh!
