A truck stop squeegee was the only thing between a trucker and a knife-wielding motorist at Speedway at U.S. 35 and U.S. 20 Monday night (March 31).
Police were dispatched around 10 p.m. to deal with a road rage incident in a truck stop in LaPorte, Indiana.
The dispute allegedly began when 51-year-old James Shafer became enraged when a parked semi truck kept him from fueling up his vehicle. Shafer began honking his horn and screaming obscenities at the driver in an attempt to get him to move his truck.
When the truck driver tried to verbally defend himself, Shafer broke one of the truck’s headlights and then pulled out a pocket knife, opening the blade. The driver responded by grabbing a squeegee and swinging it at Shafer, who struck it several times with his knife.
Shafer was charged with criminal recklessness, battery, and criminal mischief. He is now out of jail on a $750 bond.
