A truck driver lost his life early this morning when his truck ran off of the Turner Turnpike overpass and fell to the roadway below, catching fire during the crash.
The crash happened around 3:30 this morning in Sapulpua at the point where I-44 crosses over Highway 66. According to state troopers, a trucker hauling strawberries was headed east at “a high rate of speed” when one of the wheels of the cab went up and over a wall, leaving the truck hanging upside down from the overpass. The truck then caught fire and burned for about half an hour before crews could extinguish it.
The truck driver was killed. No one else was inside the truck, according to troopers on scene.
Investigators are still working to determine what caused the crash. One witness said that it could have been a tire blowout, but police say that the tire might have burst when the truck hit the wall.
