A tanker truck driver lost his life last night after his truck was struck by an impaired motorist in Westport, Connecticut.
The crash happened on southbound I-95 near Exit 17 just before 7 p.m. According to reports, 64 year old truck driver Thomas Reynolds was traveling in the far right lane alongside 35 year old motorist Ramses T. Rival, driving a Mercedes in the center lane. State police say that the Mercedes struck the driver’s side of the tanker truck, causing it to veer to the right. The tanker hit a metal guardrail, rolled over onto the driver’s side, than collided with a light pole and a tree, and then caught fire.
The Mercedes also swerved right and struck a concrete barrier.
Reynolds was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rival was not injured in the crash. He was arrested on DUI charges, but later released on a $10,000 bond.
Connecticut State Police say that the investigation into the crash is ongoing and more charges may be filed.
Southbound I-95 between Exit 17 and Exit 18 was closed for eleven hours for crash clean up and investigation.
