CDOT Warns Truckers To Beware “The Wolf”
The Colorado Department of Transportation has issued a warning to truck drivers about the dangers of descending Wolf Creek Pass (U.S. Highway 160) unprepared.
Wolf Creek Pass Claims Two Truckers’ Lives In Four Years
CDOT warns that 49 semis have crashed on the west side of Wolf Creek pass in a four year span. Two truck drivers lost their lives on “the Wolf” during that time.
The main things to remember when descending Wolf Creek Pass?
- Plan before you go. Take a look at maps and be able to identify the hairpin turns, brake stations, chain up stations, and runaway truck ramps.
- Westbound drivers should not exceed speeds of 25 m.p.h. Stay in low gear and use your flashers to warn other drivers of your slower speed.
- Make sure your brakes are good to go. Check your brakes before you descend the pass, resist the urge to “ride” your brakes, and don’t allow brakes to overheat.
