A spokeswoman for the California Department of Transportation told The Sacramento Bee that the crash happened in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, between J Street and Richards Boulevard.

The tractor-trailer driver was able to escape the flames by getting out of his cab.

He told first responders that he saw a pair of headlights coming towards his truck when he swerved to avoid an accident; unfortunately, the two vehicles collided anyway.

Highway traffic came to a complete stop while first responders controlled the fire.

Northbound lanes of I-5 were reopened after 30 minutes; however, all southbound lanes were closed for more than 8 hours following the crash.

The coroner will release the pickup truck driver’s identity once their family has been notified.
