Goodyear announces candidates for Highway Hero award

Published:

The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company announced the three finalists for its 35th annual Highway Hero Awards.

Mid-America Trucking Show

The award will be presented March 22, during the 2018 Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kentucky.

“Since 1983, Goodyear has honored professional truck drivers who have put themselves in harm’s way to help others, making the Goodyear Highway Hero Award the oldest and most prestigious honor of its kind,” said Gary Medalis, marketing director for Goodyear. “It is our privilege to have recognized truck drivers for their extraordinary acts of heroism over the last three decades and we will continue this great tradition next month.”

Three Finalists Named

Among the many heroic events performed by those in the trucking industry, Goodyear narrowed it down to three finalists. They are Brian Bucenell of Richmond, Virginia, Ryan Moody of Tacoma, Washington, and Frank Vieira of Ancaster, Ontario.

Bucenell earned his nomination based on an event that took place near Toledo, Ohio. After hearing about a high-speed chase coming up behind him, he spotted the car fleeing the police and used his truck to force the speeder to stop by being sandwiched between his trailer and the guard rail. The chase had gone on for over 20 minutes.

Driving down a busy Chicago Freeway Moody stopped his vehicle to prevent further injury to a motorcyclist who had laid down his bike in front of him. He performed basic aid to prevent blood loss until paramedics arrived on the scene, saving the man’s life.

After hearing a large crash in Toronto Vieira applied pressure to a motorist’s wound while using his spare hands to call 911. Another driver approached to help but fainted at the sight of things and Vieira saved him as well as he used his leg to pull the fainted person out of the way of traffic. Both men survived.

Nominate A Driver

The Goodyear Highway Hero Award was established in 1983 to honor truck drivers who put themselves in harm’s way to help others.

Nominations for 2019 will be accepted later this year on their website and run through the end of November. If you know of a good deed done, make sure they get recognition.
