Semi truck crashes into back of Michigan State Police cruiser

The truck driver was cited for careless driving.

On Wednesday morning a semi truck driver crashed into the back of a Michigan State Police Cruiser near Benton Township.

Police said the crash happened shortly after 7 a.m. where I-94 and U.S. 31 meet, near mile marker 30 for Napier Avenue in Benton Township.

Russell Bawks, a 20-year MSP veteran, was driving behind two Michigan Department of Transportation plow trucks when his cruiser was rear-ended by the semi-truck driven by Jordan Daniel Howell, 23, of Canton, Ohio.

After striking the cruiser, the semi-truck jackknifed and struck the vehicle a second time.

Police said Bawks suffered minor injuries in the crash. He was treated and has been released from Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph. Bawks has already returned to work.

“He was taken to a hospital as a precaution,” said First Lt. Michael Shaw, an MSP spokesman, who stressed that the injuries were minor.

Howell was cited for reckless driving after the  crash.
