An intoxicated 25-year-old man had to be rescued from his burning car after crashing his 1999 Honda CRV underneath a tractor-trailer that was making a delivery early Friday morning.
Around 2 a.m. Jose Nunez of Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. was pulled from his fiery vehicle with serious injuries and taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said. Nunez was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after he crashed a 1999 Honda CRV in front of the convenience store off Route 25A on the border of Mount Sinai and Port Jefferson Station, Suffolk County police said.
Nunez was driving west on Route 25A at about 2 a.m. when he lost control at Hallock Avenue, crossed the median, went over a front lawn and into the lot, sideswiping a light pole and crashing into the tractor trailer, police said.
“The Honda was stuck in full throttle position, and the engine of the SUV caught fire near the fuel cells of the tractor trailer,” police said in a news release.
“Sixth Precint officer, Port Jefferson EMS members, Mount Sinai Fire Department and the Terryville Fire Department responded and found the driver trapped and unconscious,” police said.
Police Sgt. Richard Grice said we, “used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire near the engine, while Officers Jamie Treadwell and Brian Cann used another fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire near the rear of the vehicle.”
Officer Chris Weiner, along with firefighters, “kept the driver’s airway open” until rescuers including Officers Anthony Buonagurio, Fred Crasa, and Thomas Wassmer used the Jaws of Life to cut the Honda and pull out Nunez.
