Truckers who want to bring attention to problems with trucking industry regulations are planning a ‘slow roll’ protest in Indiana later this week.
The slow roll protest will be taking place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 21 on I-465 in Indiana. Drivers planning on participating will line up at one of several meeting points, convoy at speeds of 45 to 50 m.p.h. around I-465 twice, and then end the slow roll at the T.A. truck stop off of I-70 in Clayton.
Indiana State Police say that they are aware of the slow roll and that they expect 400 to 500 truck drivers to participate. Troopers say that they expect a peaceful protest but that they will be providing extra patrols to make sure everything goes smoothly.
The protest organizers say that the convoy is intended to bring attention to problems within the trucking industry including Electronic Logging Device (ELD) regulations.
“This doesn’t just affect the truck drivers. It affects the public as well because they’re the ones that are on the interstates with their families. These regulations and ELDs were supposed to save lives,” event organizer Amber Furry told local news station My Wabash Valley.
The Indiana slow roll is one of several planned protest activities leading up to a nationwide truck driver shutdown planned for April 12 by members of the group Black Smoke Matters. Similar slow roll protests have already happened in Illinois and in Texas.
