Troopers with the New York State Police have kicked off a new enforcement effort to catch drivers who are speeding or performing other driving violations.
“Operation Hardhat” is currently being conducted as part of a partnership between New York State Police, the New York State Department of Transportation, and the Thruway Authority.
The statewide enforcement campaign kicked off on July 14.
The purpose of Operation Hardhat is to target reckless or distracted drivers in construction zones.
During the enforcement effort, New York State troopers are dressing as construction workers to nab drivers who might be speeding, texting, or violating the Move Over law.
During the last stateside Operation Hardhat campaign, more than 1000 citations were issued, officials say.
“New York’s highway workers and first responders put their personal safety on the line every day to help ensure our roads and bridges remain safe and in good repair,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo. “As New Yorkers, we have a responsibility to keep these essential workers out of harm’s way – and that means slowing down, moving over and using common sense. We have zero tolerance for those who drives recklessly and endanger the lives of others.”
