Truck driver arrested after fleeing crash that spilled iron oxide

A truck driver was arrested in New York on Monday after fleeing from a crash that spilled his load of iron oxide across the highway. 

The accident happened on September 1st in Rotterdam, New York along Interstate 90 at approximately 12:40 a.m.

According to News 10, 29-year-old truck driver Mohamed M. Sheriff was traveling along I 90 westbound when he struck the Gordon Road overpass, splitting open the trailer and spilling the dry chemical all over the road way. 

Police say that Sheriff was aware of the damage and spilled chemicals but kept driving, leaving a trail of the red dry chemical behind him. Police were able to use this trail to track the driver down and discovered Sheriff and his 2007 Mack at Benjamin Moore in Amsterdam. 

Sheriff was arrested and charged with misdemeanor reckless endangerment and is facing just under a year behind bars.
