Trucker killed by impaired motorist while setting up hazard cones

A truck driver was killed while setting up hazard cones in North Carolina on Wednesday afternoon. 

The accident happened on January 19th in Union County, North Carolina on Highway 74. 

According to WBTV 3, the truck driver was pulled over onto the shoulder of Highway 74 after his truck broke down. The driver got out of the truck to place orange hazard cones behind the vehicle but as he was doing so, an oncoming Toyota Camry ran off the road and struck the trucker, killing him. 

First responders soon arrived and pronounced the 53-year-old trucker, Stanley George Gumm Jr., dead at the scene. The driver of the Camry was identified as Daniel Ray Thompson and police determined him to be impaired at the scene. 

Thompson was arrested and is facing charges of death by vehicle and driving while impaired.
