Five dead in big rig crash after SUV driver ran stop sign, North Carolina police say

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) says that five people were killed on Sunday afternoon in a crash that occurred near Eastover involving a passenger vehicle and a semi truck.

The crash occurred around 3 p.m. on March 5 at the intersection of Hayfield Road and Highway 13 in Cumberland County, North Carolina.

Troopers say that the SUV driver ran a stop sign and drove into the path of a semi truck traveling north on Highway 13.

The semi truck rolled over off the road. The SUV also went off the road and caught fire.

Of the five people traveling inside the SUV, four were pronounced dead at the scene. A fifth person was airlifted to a hospital, but later died from their injuries.

The truck driver, 27 year old North Carolina resident Tyrik Bannerman, suffered minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
