Suspect in death of missing trucker fatally shot after taking four hostage

A suspect in death of missing trucker was fatally shot in Winnipeg on Thursday after taking four adults and one child hostage.

Truck driver Farah Mohamud was found dead inside of an apartment building, not far from where he left his truck parked, on December 26th after being reported missing the week prior. On Thursday, December 29th, Police were called to the same apartment building at 25 Furby Street in Winnipeg, Canada on reports of a 19-year-old woman being held hostage with an “edged” weapon. The man barricaded himself, the 19-year-old woman, a three-year-old, and two more adults inside of the apartment, reported CBC

Eventually, a 33-year-old woman and the child were released from the apartment, while a 23-year-old man escaped by climbing down the outside of the building from a third story balcony. The 19-year-old woman remained inside, and police determined that she was being held against her will and that her life was in danger.

Around four hours after their arrival at the scene, officers shot the 52-year-old man, killing him. The woman was not injured.

The suspect has a criminal record described as “extensive,” which includes violence and weapons offenses. He is a suspect in the death of Mohamud, reported Winnipeg Free Press.

Police are asking anyone with information to call detectives at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
