Teen struck by loose semi truck wheel while changing tire

A teenage boy suffered serious injuries after a semi truck wheel came loose and struck him as he changed a flat tire on a roadside vehicle.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 15th in Lake County, Indiana at around 10:30 a.m. on Interstate 80/94

Police report that the car was stopped on the right side of the road on the shoulder while occupants of the car worked to change a flat tire on the car. As the people worked, a passing semi truck had a wheel come loose, which struck a 15-year-old boy working on the car.

The boy was taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries, but no updates on his condition have been released. Four other people outside of the car were also hurt, but none of those injuries were life threatening, reported WNDU 16 News.

The truck driver in the incident was taken in for toxicology tests as part of a standard investigation. Police say they do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. The semi truck has been impounded for a post-crash inspection. No further information has been released.
