Tractor trailer crashes off Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel

Published:

Officials have confirmed that a semi truck went over the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened around 1:50 p.m. on June 22 at the 1 mile marker on the CBBT.

Officials say that a semi truck crashed off the west side of the northbound span of the CBBT into the water below.

Virginia Beach Police, Virginia Beach Fire & Rescue and the US Coast Guard are assisting with the search for the truck driver.

The CBBT is partially closed to northbound traffic as crews make repairs.

WTKR News reports that a person dove off the side of the CBBT to try to rescue the truck driver.

The video below appears to show the submerged cab of a blue truck at the 50 second mark.

It isn’t yet clear what caused the truck to crash off the CBBT.

A truck driver who went over the side of the CBBT on December 29, 2020, did not survive the crash.
