Trucker wins $100k lottery after stopping for a sandwich and some fuel at a gas station in Maryland.
65-year-old truck driver Thomas Spangler says that he “drives all over the East Coast and into the Midwest,” and always picks up lottery tickets along the way. He says he once won $2,000, but his recent jackpot win took him by surprise.
“The family says, there’s great luck, good luck, bad luck and Spangler luck,” the driver said of his history of luckiness.
According to the Maryland Lottery, Spangler was on his way to pick up a load of tractors in Baltimore when he stopped at a gas station in North East, Maryland to grab a sandwich and fuel up his truck. He picked up some scratch-offs out of habit, and soon revealed a one followed by several zeros.
“I started scratching and I thought I won $100,” he said. “I was happy, then I had to stare at it for 30 seconds to be sure I won.” Instead of $100, Spangler had revealed a $100,000 win on his scratch off.
Spangler, who lives in Tennessee, says he will use some of the winnings to pay off a car loan and put the rest into savings.
“Nothing like this has ever happened to me,” he said. “It couldn’t have happened at a better time.”
