Twenty-four vehicle pileup blamed on smoke from wheat field fire

A major pileup crash occurred in North Carolina on Tuesday evening, reportedly caused by limited visibility due to a nearby fire.

The crash occurred around 6 p.m. on June 6 at the Wilson County/Wayne County line near Black Creek in North Carolina.

Authorities say that 24 vehicles collided on I-795.

At least 12 people were transported for treatment of injuries, but those injuries were not life-threatening.

The crash involved a propane tanker, but the tanker was empty when the crash occurred.

Local outlet WRAL reports that a fire in a nearby wheat field produced a large amount of smoke and resulted in reduced visibility for drivers.
