Wyoming to gain nearly 200 truck parking spaces with new facilities opening off I-80 this month

Published:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is planning to open two new truck parking facilities this September along the I-80 corridor in the Laramie area.

On September 20, 2023, WYDOT will hold the grand opening ceremony for the Quealy Dome truck parking lot located on I-80 at mile marker 290 and the Fort Steele Rest Area located on I-80 at mile marker 228.

Both facilities will have about 100 truck parking spaces available, creating nearly 200 new truck parking spaces along I-80.

The truck parking facilities were created as part of the larger Interstate 80 Winter Freight/BUILD project to create more spaces for commercial drivers to wait out bad weather and closures during the winter.

“If weather conditions are poor or I-80 is closed, the new truck parking will provide additional options for truck drivers to park safely while they wait for conditions to improve,” said Tim Morton, WYDOT District 1 Construction engineer, when the project was announced.

Also part of the soon-to-be completed Interstate 80 Winter Freight/BUILD project are new truck climbing lanes located at Halleck Ridge, between mile markers 250.5-252.5 in the eastbound lanes, and at Cooper Cove, between mile markers 279.5-281.5 in the westbound lanes.

Work on the $34 million Interstate 80 Winter Freight/BUILD project began in fall 2020.
