Driver facing manslaughter charges for I-95 crash that killed 5

Published:

A truck driver is facing manslaughter charges after a wreck in a construction zone left five people dead.

The accident happened on Wednesday, July 24th at about 1:30 p.m. in Wilson County, North Carolina on Interstate 95.

According to AP News, a Freightliner hauling orange juice was heading north on I-95 when it failed to slow for traffic in a construction zone. The commercial vehicle then struck a Chevy Tahoe, a Toyota Rav-4, and two other tractor trailers. The Freightliner then caught fire.

Five people inside of the two passenger cars died in the wreck. Each of the three truck drivers were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. After the Freightliner driver was released from the hospital, he was placed under arrest and charged with five counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. He is being held on $25,000 bond.

Investigators say that speed was a factor in the crash, but impairment is not suspected.
