Man released from jail immediately run over by electric semi truck

Published:

A man is dead after getting run over by an electric semi truck immediately after being released from jail on Saturday.

The accident occurred on June 8th in Joliet, Illinois just after 4 p.m.

According to Patch Illinois, 51-year-old Brian Stotts had just been released from the Will County Jail at 3:36 p.m. and was walking at the intersection of Washington and Ottawa Streets when he was struck by an electric semi truck. Stotts died as a result of the impact, and the semi truck driver kept on going.

At 4:05 p.m. Joliet Police received a call reporting a hit-and-run collision that left a man lying in the street. Stotts was pronounced dead at the scene, and police soon obtained video footage of the electric tractor trailer involved in the incident.

Police immediately visited a business known to operate electric semi trucks and located the one from the video footage. Officers interviewed the truck driver and determined that he was unaware that he had hit anything or run over anyone. The driver had a valid license at the time of the accident and was not impaired in any way.

The truck driver was not issued any citations for the incident, which is still under investigation.

Stotts had been incarcerated for three days for violating a restraining order prior to being run over, marking his fourth time being jailed since 2020. No further information has been released.
