One dead in fatal 11-vehicle crash after rig fails to stop at intersection

One person is dead after a chain reaction crash involving 11 vehicles in California on Thursday afternoon. 

The accident happened at about 11:50 a.m. in Santa Rosa, California on westbound Highway 12 at Fulton Road. 

According to Kron4 News, a dump truck failed to slow in time at the Fulton Road and Highway 12 intersection stop light and collided with both west and eastbound vehicles as it tried to stop, sparking at least one vehicle fire. Two cars also lost tires in the collision. 

The dump truck was hauling dirt at the time of the accident. The vehicle fire was brought under control within 20 minutes, but the driver was found dead. The man was a 78-year-old former history teacher and track coach at a local high school, reported ABC 7.

Three more people in the crash sustained serious injuries. Six people sustained minor injuries. Their identities have not been released. 

The crash is still under investigation.
