Oversized load driver who tried to bypass inspection arrested for DWI, illegal weapon, NY troopers say

Published:

The New York State Police (NYSP) arrested a truck driver this week on alcohol and weapons charges after he allegedly attempted to duck a commercial vehicle inspection checkpoint.

Fifty-two year old Virginia-based truck driver William Harris was charged with class “D” felony of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the third degree and the misdemeanor of Driving While Intoxicated in a Commercial Vehicle, according to a news release from NYSP.

Troopers say that around 1:40 p.m. on August 21, the NYSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit was at the Preble Rest Stop on northbound I-81 for a commercial vehicle check “where all operators of commercial vehicles are directed to enter for an inspection.”

NYSP observed a tractor trailer hauling an oversized load attempting to bypass the mandatory commercial vehicle check.

Troopers initiated a traffic stop, and after interviewing Harris, believed that he might be intoxicated.

After field sobriety tests indicated impairment, Harris was arrested.

NYSP stated that Harris’ reportable B.A.C was .09%.

Police also located an assault weapon in his possession, which is not compliant with the New York State SAFE Act.

Harris was transported to the Cortland County Correctional Facility.
