Semi hauling stolen excavator strikes I-94 overpass in Detroit

Michigan State Police (MSP) are investigating a Sunday morning overpass strike involving stolen construction equipment.

The overpass strike occurred shortly before 10 a.m. on October 20 in Detroit, Michigan.

Troopers say that they responded to a call about an overpass strike on westbound I-94 at the Frontenac Ave overpass. When police arrived at the scene, they found a CAT excavator lying on its side, leaking fuel and hydraulic fluid.

MSP investigators believe that the excavator was being hauled on a flatbed when it struck the overpass and fell off onto the roadway.

The semi truck driver did not remain at the scene.

Troopers canvassed the area but they were unable to locate the truck or driver.

Police later learned that the excavator was stolen from a construction site on Seneca Street in Detroit.

The damage to the overpass was “superficial” and no injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation.
