A Thursday afternoon bridge strike caused serious damage and will force Georgia transportation officials to shutter a portion of I-16 until Monday.
The bridge strike occurred around 3:30 p.m. on July 11 in the Savannah area.
A truck hauling an excavator on westbound I-16 struck the Chatham Parkway overpass at mile marker 162.
No injuries were reported.
Georgia transportation officials say that the the bridge strike caused significant damage to the structure.
The Chatham Emergency Management Agency says that all lanes of I-16 westbound will remain closed through the weekend to allow for the removal of three significantly damaged beams.
I-16 westbound is expected to fully reopen on the morning of Monday, July 15.
Chatham Parkway remains closed in both directions. There is no estimated time for this road to reopen.
