Tsunami warning issued for California and Oregon following powerful earthquake

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a tsunami warning following a significant earthquake that occurred off the coast of northern California.

On December 5, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck in Humboldt County, California.

Following the earthquake, the NWS issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas between and including Davenport, California (10 miles northwest of Santa Cruz) to Douglas/Lane Line, Oregon (10 miles southwest of Florence).

“If you are located in this coastal area, move inland to higher ground. Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant inundation is possible or is already occurring. Tsunamis are a series of waves dangerous many hours after initial arrival time. The first wave may not be the largest,” the NWS alert stated.
