Work underway on new Powder Mountain runaway truck ramp

Published:

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is currently at work constructing a new runaway truck ramp.

Construction recently started on a runaway truck ramp on S.R. 158 west of Powder Mountain Resort near Eden, Utah.

“Due to the steep canyon terrain, this area has incurred several runaway truck crashes. This new truck escape ramp provides truck drivers with a safe, secure alternative in the event they are out of control coming downhill,” UDOT said.

UDOT will use a catch-net cable system for the Power Mountain runaway ramp.

“The escape ramp uses a concrete chute to guide runaway tricks into the correct position, were cable restraints are then used to stop the trucks. When a truck hits the cables, they are designed to wrap around the truck, causing it to lose speed and eventually stop,” officials said.

The project is expected to be completed in November 2024.
