A construction project on Interstate 10 through Houston will likely impact traffic for the next several years starting today.
The Texas Department of Transportation has started construction on the White Oak Bayou project as of Monday morning, January 13th on the westbound side of the I-10 Katy Freeway in the Heights area of Houston, Texas.
According to ABC 13, the westbound side of the five-lane interstate will be reduced to 3 lanes at the Taylor Street exit, which is also closed. The lane closure ends at the Heights Boulevard exit.
The project will construct I-10 over Houston Avenue instead of the Houston Avenue bridge crossing over I-10. The Houston Avenue bridge is historically struck by semi trucks multiple times a year, creating traffic backups, and I-10 typically experiences serious flooding in the area. This construction project is aimed at fixing both of these issues.
Work on the actual Houston Avenue bridge will not begin until mid 2025 and will extend through late 2027. The project will likely not be completed until 2028.
