The owner of the Dallas Cowboys logo semi truck wanted in connection with a crash that seriously injured a motorist says the man crashed into the back of the truck and severed his own arm.
The Dallas Police Department has been searching for a semi truck with a distinctive Dallas Cowboys logo on the side since it allegedly struck motorist Carlos Campos, severing his arm, and drove away early on August 19th. Now, the owner of the semi truck has contacted police to share footage of the incident that he thinks clears his driver of fault in the accident.
“I didn’t find out about this until like eight days later,” the owner said. The owner, who wants to be called Enrique, says he has been getting threatening phone calls since the incident, but knows that his driver is innocent.
“I’m afraid. I mean, I’m receiving phone calls through private numbers. They’re calling me and saying, ‘Hey dude, I know where you stay, I know where you parked your truck. We’re going to beat your a**, you better watch your six,” Enrique said.
Enrique says two black and white videos shared to him by a nearby business prove that his driver is innocent in the situation, and the motorist severed his own arm by crashing into the trailer.
“You can clearly see on the video that my driver is traveling about 20 to 30 miles per hour in the middle lane, and you can clearly see his SUV coming from the back at a high speed, impacting the back of the trailer. He (the SUV driver) tried to swing to the right, avoiding the impact,” said Enrique. “Then, on the other video, you can see him [the motorist] just keep driving off, he did not stop. And my driver kept going at a normal speed.”
Enrique says his driver was hauling heavy sheetrock, and didn’t even know he had been hit. As soon as he realized the Dallas Police Department had put out a photo of his truck, he contacted police and agreed to work with them to give them whatever information they needed. He has also reported the threatening phone calls he has started receiving.
“I’m really, really sorry about what happened to Mr. Carlos, but my truck never, never hit his car, never.”
Enrique says that he has known the truck driver in the video for 20 years, and believes that the truck driver has done no wrong.
“I know my driver, I know how responsible he is, and he would never lie to me. I called my driver, I asked him, ‘Hey, what is going on? What happened? Be honest, it’s okay, just be honest.’ He was like, ‘Boss, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t have any idea of what you’re talking about.”
Police have since inspected the semi truck and found white paint from the SUV on the back of the trailer, correlating with the footage and story from the new surveillance video. NBC5 has since reached back out to Campos, but he still maintains that the semi truck hit him.
The DPD says it is using the new surveillance video in the investigation, which is still ongoing.
