Third fatality reported in fiery 26 vehicle pileup in Green River Tunnel

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) provided an update on Friday’s fatal fiery pileup in the Green River Tunnel.

On Sunday, February 16, WYDOT shared new details on a major crash that occurred on Friday, February 14, in the westbound I-80 tunnel located near Green River, Wyoming, at mile marker 90.2.

WYDOT stated that 26 vehicles were involved in the pileup, ten passenger vehicles and 16 commercial vehicles. Of those 26 vehicles, six commercial vehicles and ten passenger vehicles were destroyed by fire.

Officials also confirmed a new fatality, bringing the total number of people killed in Friday’s crash to three.

About half of the vehicles involved in the tunnel crash had been cleared as of Sunday night, WYDOT said.

The westbound tunnel remains closed as crews continue to remove crashed and burned vehicles.

WYDOT has selected a contractor to begin moving concrete barriers to the crossover lanes in preparation for guiding traffic head-to-head in the eastbound tunnel.

WYDOT expects to open the eastbound tunnel to head-to-head traffic on Wednesday. At that time, there will be a 10.5 ft. width and 16 ft. height restriction through the head-to-head lanes in the eastbound tunnel. Oversized vehicles should contact WYDOT’s oversize loads permit office for detours.

“Thank you to the community of Green River for your support in keeping traffic moving during this thorough and complicated investigation,” said WYDOT District Engineer John Eddins. “We know that the detoured traffic was very impactful to your community this weekend, and we will continue to work to minimize impacts.”

The crash remains under investigation by WYDOT, the Wyoming Highway Patrol, and the National Transportation Safety Board.
